黄永玉，1924年出生，湖南省凤凰县，土家族，受过小学和不完全的初级中学教育。他做过瓷场工人，担任过报社编辑和记者、自由撰稿人和电影编剧。作为教育者，他担任过小学、中学教员和美术学院教授。黄永玉勤奋博学，自学成材，在美术、文学、版画、国画、油画、漫画、雕塑、小说、散文、诗歌、剧本创作等众多的艺术领域里有卓越的成就。他的许多画作更成为国宝，被博物馆和私人收藏家珍藏。
黄永玉一生充满传奇色彩，对中国二十和二十一世纪初在艺术和文学上作出了重大贡献。他的重要艺术成就包括中国美术金彩奖、终身成就奖；意大利总统通过外交部长及意大利驻华大使授予意大利总司令勋章和团结星二级骑士勋章。
